Japan’s AI regulation strategy is a calculated gamble. They’re betting that the economic benefits of faster AI adoption will outweigh the risks of lighter regulation. It’s a bet that could pay off enormously — or could look reckless in hindsight.

What I find most interesting is the honesty of the approach. Japan isn’t pretending that AI is safe. They’re explicitly choosing to accept more risk in exchange for more innovation. You can disagree with that choice, but at least it’s transparent.

The EU is making the opposite bet with equal conviction. In five years, we’ll have a much better idea of which approach was smarter. My guess? Both will end up converging toward something in the middle.
